The Friends have in their constitution the object of the Association as preservation, repair, maintenance, restoration and improvements of the Church of St Mary’s Goudhurst. These may seem very wide ranging but it is a clear statement that the Fabric of the ancient Church is what the body of people both local and further afield have dedicated their time and talent.
Putting into practice the intentions as listed above takes much effort; it is obvious that the intention of the Friends will not be fulfilled unless money is available so that we hold two major events each year, a grand Art & Craft Exhibition in August and a Christmas sale in November plus well supported Carol singing parties at Christmas. The Friends are a registered charity run by a committee elected by the AGM of members in the Easter period; the AGM provides not only a business meeting but also a convivial social occasion with a meal and entertainment.
A way of supporting the Friends in their work is to make a gift in your will, whilst life time gifts made under Gift Aid are tax efficient – please consider and we will always be happy to advise.
The Association's membership numbers are always changing, usually amounting to slightly less than 200, but owing to an ageing population we need more members to maintain the number of active people. We welcome new members as Friends whether they live in Goudhurst or being further away wishing to keep in contact with their old Parish Church via the Friends. Application forms for membership can be obtained from this site, see 'Join in', or from our secretary, details on the same page.
As was stated initially the Friends are about money and fellowship and the committee are always very conscious of the support given by existing Friends and take this opportunity to thank all associated with the Friends of St Mary’s for their generous gifts of their time and talents.
